Reduce pain and improve mobility
Find Relief from Leg & Lower Back Pain
The lower back (lumbar spine) supports much of your body's weight and enables a wide range of movements. Lower back pain often radiates into the legs, causing discomfort that can affect daily activities like walking, standing, or sitting. This pain may stem from issues like lumbar radiculopathy (commonly known as sciatica), where a compressed or irritated nerve root in the lower spine leads to radiating symptoms. At Pain, Spine & Joint Center of the Alleghenies, with locations in Warren and Saint Marys, we provide a variety of interventional pain management treatments to help relieve lower back pain, including hip pain, knee pain, and leg pain that may occur from nerve irritation or related conditions.
Factors that can contribute to lower back and leg pain include lifestyle, occupation, family history, smoking, weight, injuries, prior surgery, poor posture, and ergonomics.

Common Causes of Leg & Lower Back Pain
Lower back pain with radiation to the hip, knee, or leg is a common issue that can affect people of all ages and activity levels. It may result from injury, overuse, degenerative changes, or nerve compression, and identifying the cause is key to effective treatment.
- Lumbar Radiculopathy (Sciatica): Compression or irritation of nerve roots in the lower spine causes sharp, shooting, burning, or electric-shock-like pain that radiates from the lower back through the buttocks, hip, thigh, knee, and down the leg (often one side). It can include numbness, tingling, or weakness.
- Herniated or Bulging Disc: Disc material presses on nerve roots, leading to inflammation and radiating pain into the leg.
- Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal compresses nerves, often causing leg pain worsened by standing or walking.
- Degenerative Disc Disease or Osteoarthritis: Wear and tear on spinal joints or discs leads to chronic lower back pain that may refer to the hip, buttocks, or thighs.
- Muscle Strain or Sprain: Overuse or sudden movements strain lower back muscles or ligaments, causing localized pain that can refer to the hips or legs.
- Facet Joint Issues: Inflammation or arthritis in spinal joints contributes to back pain with possible referral to the hips or legs.
- Spondylolisthesis: A vertebra slips forward, potentially irritating nerves and causing leg symptoms.
- Piriformis Syndrome or Other Soft Tissue Issues: Tight muscles (e.g., piriformis) irritate the sciatic nerve, mimicking radiculopathy with hip and leg pain.
Wrist Pain Treatments Options
Physical Therapy
Targeted exercises and techniques strengthen core and back muscles, improve flexibility, reduce nerve pressure, and restore function.
Ultrasound-Guided Transforaminal or Selective Nerve Root Injections
Targeted injections near specific nerve roots to relieve radicular pain traveling to the hip, knee, or leg.
Radiofrequency Ablation
A minimally invasive procedure that uses heat to disrupt nerves transmitting pain signals from the lower back or facets, offering longer-lasting relief for chronic pain.
Ultrasound-Guided Epidural Steroid Injections
Precise injections deliver anti-inflammatory medication around irritated nerve roots to reduce swelling, pain, and radiating symptoms in the lower back and legs.
Nerve Blocks
Temporary or diagnostic injections block pain signals from affected nerves, providing relief for lower back and radiating leg pain.
Surgery Referral
If conservative and interventional treatments are insufficient, a specialist may evaluate you for procedures like discectomy, laminectomy, or decompression to address severe nerve compression.
Medication Management
Anti-inflammatory, pain-relief, or nerve-pain medications (e.g., NSAIDs, muscle relaxants, or neuropathic agents) help reduce discomfort, inflammation, and associated symptoms.
Regenerative Medicine – Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
Uses your own blood components to promote healing in damaged spinal tissues or supporting structures.
What Our Patients Say
"Very happy with my experience here. Nerve ablation has me regaining some of my movement and that's been a great blessing."
"Low back pain was affecting every part of my life until I received sacroiliac joint injections from Dr. Vollmer last week. Sometimes we don’t understand the real weight of chronic pain until it has been lifted from us. Thank you Tammy Weis and Dr. Vollmer for giving me relief!"
